part of collection Uninterrupted Stare - Daemons
The artist is the outsider. The observer. The voyeur who appears engrossed in the subject in front of her, enjoying a moment of peace and solitude, seemingly undesired to be stared back at -- especially since she deliberately leaves the subjects almost faceless. Normally, when you look at a portrait you look at the eyes and the face which are the most expressive. However, in this series she wants to rob the viewer of that intimacy and to make her work more mysterious and surreal. She concentrates on the body language to be communicative without the distraction of the eyes.
The portraits as such become the embodiment of her mind's eye, open to be interpreted without the subject’s own facial expression to dictate the mood. In each drawing the freedom of the figurative is juxtaposed with a modern abstract. The artist seems to work from a non-thoughtful flow of lines and gestures where she surrenders to her own inner emotion creating an inexhaustible rhythmic narration. She does this through expressive and intricate set of recurring patterns or marks, making a connection between the visual and the physical experience.
In this series Nina Sumarac seems to celebrate the complexity of women who are both powerful and susceptible. The women she creates are vulnerable yet dignified. They are without imperfections. It is this interpretation of beauty that is most intriguing. What ultimately seems to inspire her in the creation of these characters is femininity through her eyes. At times strong, at times frail; these women seem to follow the paths of her emotions. They are within her and are part of her being. Her drawings, act as her own personal diary, often melancholic, surreal and seemingly symbolic, but also, humorous and melodramatic.
